What is Volumetric Weight?
Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight or DIM weight) estimates how much space a package occupies relative to its actual physical weight. Logistics carriers, including Noon, use volumetric weight to price shipments because large, lightweight packages consume as much cargo space as smaller, heavy packages.
The volumetric weight formula compares two measurements:
- Actual Weight: The physical weight of your package in kilograms
- Volumetric Weight: A calculated value based on package dimensions
The higher of the two becomes the chargeable weight — the basis on which shipping fees are calculated.
Noon Volumetric Weight Formula
Noon's official guidance for UAE DirectShip uses the following formula:
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ 5000
The divisor of 5000 is Noon's standard volumetric factor for UAE DirectShip. The resulting volumetric weight is compared to actual weight, and the greater value determines the chargeable weight.
Real-World Examples
Example 1: Large, Light Item (Clothing)
Package: 40cm × 30cm × 20cm, Actual Weight: 0.8 kg
Volumetric Weight: (40 × 30 × 20) ÷ 5000 = 24,000 ÷ 5000 = 4.80 kg
Actual Weight: 0.80 kg
Chargeable Weight: max(0.80, 4.80) = 4.80 kg (6× actual!)
Example 2: Dense, Small Item (Electronics)
Package: 15cm × 10cm × 8cm, Actual Weight: 2.5 kg
Volumetric Weight: (15 × 10 × 8) ÷ 5000 = 1,200 ÷ 5000 = 0.24 kg
Actual Weight: 2.50 kg
Chargeable Weight: max(2.50, 0.24) = 2.50 kg (actual weight wins)
Example 3: Balanced Item (Cosmetics Set)
Package: 20cm × 15cm × 10cm, Actual Weight: 0.6 kg
Volumetric Weight: (20 × 15 × 10) ÷ 5000 = 3,000 ÷ 5000 = 0.60 kg
Actual Weight: 0.60 kg
Chargeable Weight: max(0.60, 0.60) = 0.60 kg (equal, either charged)
How to Reduce Volumetric Weight
Reducing volumetric weight directly reduces your DirectShip costs:
- Right-size packaging: Use the smallest box that safely fits your product
- Compress soft goods: Vacuum-seal or compress clothing, linens, and soft toys
- Remove air: Eliminate unnecessary internal packaging materials
- Consider envelope shipping: For flat items under 2cm thick, use padded envelopes instead of boxes
- Test different suppliers: Some product packaging is over-sized by default; switching suppliers can reduce dimensions
Volumetric vs Actual: Quick Reference
- Volumetric heavier: Large but lightweight items (clothing, bedding, decor) — optimize packaging to save
- Actual heavier: Dense items (electronics, supplements, heavy tools) — weight is your cost driver
- Equal: Balanced packaging — no further optimization needed
Frequently Asked Questions
What divisor does Noon use for volumetric weight?
Noon UAE uses a divisor of 5000 for standard DirectShip parcels. This converts cubic centimeter volume to a volumetric weight in kilograms. Note that different fulfillment modes (FBN, FBP) may use different tiering systems rather than pure weight-based calculation.
Does volumetric weight apply to all Noon fulfillment modes?
Volumetric weight directly applies to DirectShip where it determines the chargeable weight for logistics fees. For FBN (Fulfilled by Noon), the system uses size tiers instead of a pure volumetric formula. FBP uses a hybrid approach. Check the Noon Partner Hub for the specific tiering system used in each mode.
How much can optimizing packaging save on DirectShip?
Reducing package dimensions by just 5cm on each side (length, width, height) can reduce volumetric weight by 30-50% for large items. For a package currently charged at 4.8 kg volumetric weight, reducing dimensions could bring it to 2.4 kg — halving your weight-based shipping cost.
Is volumetric weight calculated before or after packaging?
Always use the outer packaging dimensions (including all padding and protective materials) when calculating volumetric weight. Shipping carriers measure the outer package, not just the product itself. Include everything that adds size to your shipment.
Does VAT apply to DirectShip fees?
Yes. Like all Noon fees, DirectShip fees are subject to 5% UAE VAT. The VAT is applied to the base DirectShip fee (calculated on the chargeable weight). Always factor in VAT when estimating total fulfillment costs.
